teaching my horse western – bit switch?
I have a 7 year old quarter pony who is a green jumper – I also have another horse that i compete in western and english with, so i do know what i’m doing for western as well. My pony has a D-ring snaffle for english right now and i will use it in the beginning stages for teaching her western, but i was wondering what is the smoothest transition bits (i don’t mind doing it in a couple stages) to get her used to more of a curb? She has never done ANY western in her life, and i know it will take a while for her, but i don’t want to change her bit too quickly, she has a pretty soft mouth.
Keep her in the snaffle (D ring or O ring is fine) and just loosen up a lot while you’re riding. Try to train her to neck rein in the snaffle first, before you put a shanked bit on. If she responds well on a loose rein and leg pressure, then switching bits won’t really be a big deal. You can go to a shanked Argentine style bit, if you want to keep a jointed mouthpiece, or just to a grazing style curb with a low port. As long as she is trained well in the snaffle, the switch shouldn’t be much of a problem. If she exhibits behavior issues in a shanked bit, go back to the snaffle, or try a different bit to see if it’s just the fit, etc.
